HDMS RECEIVES $4,000.00 MAIN STREET ARGENTA DTR GRANT |
NORTH LITTLE ROCK JANUARY 30, 2008: Main Street Argenta, Inc., North Little Rock‘s official Main Street organization, has awarded a $4,000.00 Downtown Redevelopment Grant (DTR) to HDMS, (Hicks, Dowty, McCauley & Schell) – Architects + Interior Designers for design renovations to their recently acquired property at 409 Main Street (see attached electronic photo file for check presentation). The property, known as the M. Malnik Building, was recently acquired and renovated to become the headquarters of HDMS.
“This grant is the first of our 2007-08 DTR Mini-grants, and we are delighted that HDMS is the recipient”, stated Main Street Argenta Board President Daryl Peeples. “These grants are designed to reward firms that invest in historic preservation, and the Malnik Property renovation received one of our highest grant ratings”, Peeples continued. According to Peeples, “For 2007-08 $10,000.00 was allocated to matching grants for improvements and investments in properties located in North Little Rock’s Downtown Historic Commercial District. The focus of the grant projects is high visibility, high impact, long term projects. We did not set a dollar limit for Mini-Grants, although applicants were informed that four to six projects would be considered by our Grant Committee”. A match of 2-1 was required for consideration. For example, applicants were required to secure $10,000 to be eligible for $5,000 from Main Street Argenta. In-kind services of up to 50% of the match were permitted.

Editorial: Breathing new life into downtown |
Published Thursday, October 11, 2007 12:09 PM CDT
With a police estimate of from 1,750 to 2,200 attending the Argenta Street Beat held last Friday night to frolic and dance to three bands, it is hard not to call the event a success.
Add to this the fact that Main Street Argenta (MSA) the organization responsible for pulling the shindig off, paid all the wages for the 17 police officers working that night, who can complain. But wait there’s more—it also footed the bill for the Street Department employees who continuously swept throughout the area picking up what amounted to very little debris, and the electrician who made a reusable connection box for future events. |

Main Street Argenta EPA Brownfields Cleanup Project |
The Smarthouse Way site was accepted by the Arkansas Department of
Environmental Quality (ADEQ) to participate in the Arkansas Brownfields
Program in early 2004. The site consists of approximately 5.8 acres and will be
developed as possible mixed use retail, office and residential (condominiums or
apartments) units on land identified as the South Tract of the Smarthouse Way
Property.
The general location of the site is shown on maps found at the tabbed
pages under GRID MAPS. A Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) was
performed by Land Recycling Company (LRC) in October, 2004 and revealed that
the property has shown evidence of environmental impact to soils as a result of
historical site usage. The property was partially used for residential purposes in
the past, but has also been occupied by several industrial operations, some
dating back to the late 1800’s (LRC – October, 2004). Previous occupants of the
southern tract include a scrap paper company, a scrap metal company and
associated junk yard, a steel manufacturing company, and railroad lines. The
property has been vacant since the 1960s.

Higher-Density Development |
|
No one likes sprawl and the traffic congestion it creates, yet proposals for increasing density in new and existing neighborhoods often are squashed by community fears of public housing, crime and ugly high rises. Higher-Density Development: Myth and Fact
Dispels these negative connotations, by comparing the advantages and drawbacks of higher- and low-density development. The definition of higher-density development is relative to the community it is in – it could be single family homes on smaller lots, or |
